US boosts army presence in Caribbean amid rising tensions with Venezuela
At least 10 CV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, used by special-operations forces, reportedly arrived from Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico on Monday night. Meanwhile, C-17 cargo planes from Fort Stewart and Fort Campbell in Georgia and Kentucky also flew into Puerto Rico, according to flight tracking data.
Military personnel and equipment were transported as part of the buildup, confirmed by US officials. A spokesperson for US Southern Command, which oversees American forces in Latin America, described the movements as routine and standard military practice, adding that details of operations are not disclosed for operational security reasons.
The deployment follows a series of US actions targeting Venezuela, including President Donald Trump’s blockade on oil tankers entering and leaving the country. Trump stated that the US has assembled “a massive armada… the biggest we’ve ever had in South America,” and indicated that similar measures could soon be applied on land.
The increased presence underscores Washington’s ongoing pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro while signaling the United States’ readiness to maintain a strong strategic posture in the region.
