Shooting in Kentucky Claims Three Lives, Including Gunman
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his sorrow on X, stating, "I’m heartbroken to share the shooting in Lexington (city) at Richmond Road Baptist Church has taken the lives of two people."
The violent episode began at 11:36 a.m. local time (15:36 GMT) when the suspect opened fire on a Kentucky State Police trooper near Blue Grass Airport on Terminal Drive.
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers detailed that the trooper had stopped a vehicle on Terminal Drive following a license plate reader alert near Versailles Road.
After the trooper was shot, he was rushed to medical care and is currently in stable condition. The suspect escaped the initial scene.
Weathers clarified the shooting occurred outside the airport terminal and was not connected to Blue Grass Airport’s daily operations.
The suspect then allegedly took control of a car in the 3700 block of Belleau Drive without harming anyone and headed to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where he unleashed gunfire on church grounds.
Authorities confirmed no injuries occurred during the carjacking.
Four individuals were shot at the church, including two women—aged 72 and 32—who died on site. Two male victims were hospitalized, with one in critical condition and the other stable.
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased women as Beverly Gum, 72, and
Christina Combs, 32, both congregants of the church.
Law enforcement officers shot and killed the suspect at the scene.
Kentucky State Police summarized the incident on X: "The suspect shot a trooper and then fled the scene, ending up at the Richmond Road Baptist Church."
Police also confirmed, "There are multiple victims at the church, and EMS (Emergency Medical Services) is on scene."
Local police and state authorities quickly secured the area, with investigations into the attack actively underway.
